PAPM 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Friedrich List, Economic Nationalism, Utopian Socialism
Document Summary
Post malthus, econ is seen as the dismal science . The critiques come against the idea that human society is naturally unfair, terrible for the poor. Two sections of critique: economic nationalism (the american system and list) and utopian. Economic nationalism: gets a bad rep b/c of the successes of free traders, the dominance of neoliberalism in economics. Hamilton wrote report on manufactures (1791), which said free trade locks us into agrarian production, restraining the economic development of the manufacturing sector. If they stay specialized in agriculture, the manufacturing sector will never grow and they will rely on the uk for all manufactured goods--> thus, us manufacturing must be improved. (others in american school: clay, carey, and raymond) Lincoln really applies hamilton (and other american economists) logic, which follows: Nationalization of strategic resources (ie. riverways, nationalization of ideas, railroad infrastructure) Help develop science (by ignoring foreign copyright and patent laws, education infrastructure)
