Document Summary

The main question here is what knowledge is. This question is tied with the question of why philosophers will make the best governors. What is knowledge for plato: knowledge is a capacity. It"s the capacity to recognize what there truly is. The knowledge that the guardians possess is not factual or specialized knowledge. It"s a general knowledge of the forms/ideas, or the general principles of reality. Knowledge for plato is a capacity to know what is, as it is. Opinion and belief lie in between knowledge and ignorance. They presuppose a level of employment of universal concepts and principles but they piecemeal, they lack whole-ness. So, knowledge is about the forms, the principles the sources of all things, the perfect ideal forms of all things. Opinions and beliefs are about the individual, concrete, imperfect things that we encounter in our everyday life.
