When i for my adventitious idea, my will does not seem to participate in the formation process. It proves that my mind hasn"t produced these ideas out of itself. The idea of a chair in front of me presents itself despite my will, which makes it makes reliable than the fictitious ideas. We have two distinct and quite different ideas of the sun, depending on whether we look at it with a naked eye, or observe it with telescope. Then, the natural impulse that i have in me to believe adventitious ideas is a blind impulse after all, and i shouldn"t trust it. So, the criteria (human nature and the will) seem to be inadequate to make the connection between my ideas/representation of the object, and the actual external objects. The way that descartes talks about is to take ideas as modes of thought.
