Document Summary

Objective: to introduce important concepts in the study of moral issues. Reading: weston"s chapter 1 ethics as a learning experience p. 3-17. In this initial chapter, weston gives a broad explanation of the study of moral issues. You will need to be familiar with the concepts and definitions introduced in this chapter in order to full understand future readings. For weston, these concepts are the essential building blocks" or basic tools in the study of moral issues. (the vital definitions are discussed immediately below in the key concepts and arguments section). To my mind, the key message of the chapter goes beyond terms and definitions. The chapter"s overall message is about the kind of enterprise we become involved in when we begin to study moral issues. As part of that enterprise, we also must acknowledge that we are connecting to a larger world. Weston gives two strong reasons, both tied closely to ideas about community and personal development.
