Document Summary
February 27, 2015: parfit (cont"d) and narrative identity: parfit reasons & persons, two kinds of identity. Identity doesn"t matter: apart from our brains/bodies and related mental events, we are not. Our identity over time just involves (a) relation r psychological connectedness and/or psychological continuity with the right kind of cause, provided (b) that this relation doesn"t take a. Isn"t really concerned with what makes a person the same throughout time: criticisms. Narrative identity isn"t actual about personal identity at all. More concerned w/creating an autobiographical account of who we are rather than what makes us who we are. Controversial stance: killing in these cases is morally permissible. Moral status arguments: the morality of abortion rests on the moral status of a fetus. Looks at the fetus as a morally viable entity with a right to life. If we say that a fetus is a person, then we are ascribing identity to the fetus.
