PHIL 2003 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Tu Quoque, Straw Man, Ad Hominem
Document Summary
Tu quoque: the fallacy of arguing that an accusation is false merely on the basis of a premise to the effect that others are open to the accusation as well. Walter: hey, wait a minute, you cheated on your income tax last year. The opposition is in no position to attack the government for increasing the deficit. When they formed the government a few years ago, they created a massive deficit that we are still coping with. (161) Straw man: the fallacy of arguing that a view is false on the basis of a premise that mischaracterizes the view. Communism is a ridiculous political system that no one in their right mind could adopt. What i object to most about those people who opposed capital punishment is that they believe that the lives of convicted murderers are more important than the lives of the policemen and prison guards who protect us.
