Document Summary

Last lecture (during revision ime" cause we were late) Popular belief is that the mind is a very powerful set of interconnected computers. A computer program speciies what kind of internal processes take place: given an input, and giving an output. We have seen this input/output thing before: but, with a computer, we can see what is going on inside. Searle makes a contrast between syntax and semanics: those come from the study of language, ex: bob went to the store. You also need the semanics to know what the sentence means. Searle: what is characterisic of the mind:: mind has both syntax and semanics, but computer has purely syntacic principles, therefore, the mind cannot be just a computer. What planet are we on: he consults his dicionary, he then outputs papers, also in chinese, with the answers, remember this! Turing suggested that a very powerful system may be able to think and to act like a mind.
