PHIL 2550 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Consequentialism, The Good Life, Virtue Ethics
Document Summary
** the answers on the activity are subjective to the discussion in class but the questions are important to consider. Two objections: virtue ethics cannot be codified into a set of rules or principles. Virtue ethics can employ v-rules , such as do what is honest/charitable/etc . Note: these is a long list of vices, mush longer than the virtues it would seem: cultural relativity seems to pose a special problem for virtue ethics, which ends up seeming overly subjective. This is also a problem for consequentialism and deontology. Cultural relativity is less a problem form virtue ethics: local differences might generate variations in action according to the virtues, but the list of virtues is more or less stable. Normative ethics and moral psych: philosophical ethics had generated deep disagreement among theorists, who cannot agree on what theory captures morality best. I believe there to be a difference.
