Document Summary

Initial characterization: conflict between moral practice and moral intuitions. Moral practice: blame/praise people for what is done and how people are (their character) Intuition: people can"t be morally assessed for what is not their fault; for what"s due to factors beyond your control: nagle believes this is correct. Illustration: drunk driver, one time you could be driving drunk and you are wrongfully blamed. It is not your fault that there was a person on the road, but it is your fault for driving drunk: another time you could have luck and make it home safely without hurting yourself or someone else. Luck impacts assessments: of the person (moral worth, of the action (moral responsibility, your moral worth can be kind of in the middle but you can do horrible actions that you hold moral responsibility for. Worry: erosion of moral judgment, once we notice how much involves luck, we start to lose our grip on moral assessment.
