Document Summary

Auditing canadian democracy"s citizenship can tell us more about the inclusiveness and responsiveness. The focus of this chapter is not justice for minorities or tolerance but political interest, political knowledge and political activity, both electoral and non-electoral. Elections are at the core of participation in our canadian democracy, and is the main way of exercising canadian democratic citizenships. Canada has experienced steep and low voter turnout over the years and ranks on one of the lowest democracies in voting. Canadians are skeptical in thinking that change will be made by political affiliation. Authors write that canadians would be happier if they were working with an interest group instead. They inform us that canadians score well on the list of countries whose people are joining boycotts, attending peaceful demonstrations and signing petitions, but joining a political party ranks much lower than that. Most canadians that do these actions are considered the well educated and are the people who generally vote.
