Document Summary
Rods in eye(s) take longer to adjust to dark than cones do. Full adaptation in the dark occurs after around 20-30 minutes. There"s 2 waves of adaptation: cones are responsible for the first 10 minutes typically, after 10 minutes rods begin to adjust. This accounts for a second wave" of adjustment. When ganglion cell is unstimulated/at rest it is constantly firing @ regular intervals. Rate of firing will change when ganglion cells are stimulated: red light - excites red cones. Causes red-green ganglion cells to fire @ increased rate: green light - excites green cones. Causes red-green ganglion cells to fire @ lower rate: yellow light - excites red cones and green cones equally. Red cones excite the red-green and yellow-blue ganglion cells. Green cones excite yellow-blue ganglion cells but inhibit red-green ganglion cells: blue light - excites blue cones. Blue cones inhibit yellow-blue ganglion cells and therefore rate of firing slows.
