Psychology was influenced by the forces of philosophy and physiology. Wundt wanted to define psychology as its own science and was successful in doing so. Stated the focus of psychology was consciousness. G. stanley hall established the first american laboratory, launched the first psychology journal, and was president of the american psychological association (apa) Structuralism: the task of psychology is to break down consciousness into its basic forms and find out how these forms are related introspection: self-observation of one"s consciousness; used by structuralists. Auditory tones, optical illusions, and visual stimuli were used.
