Altered states of awareness - any mental state that is different from normal (due to fatigue, drugs, trauma, hypnosis, etc. ) Most of us sleep over 175,000 hours in lifetime (7hrs per night) Sleep during sleep we are not unconscious, just in an altered state of consciousness is universal throughout animal kingdom, during sleep there is always a risk of death, so there are benefits from doing it. The nature of sleep look at awake vs. sleep to analyze sleep. Frequency rate of repetition of waves. Awake: beta activity, high frequency, low amplitude. Drowsy: alpha activity, medium frequency, med amplitude.
