PSYC 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Confounding, Statistical Process Control, Operational Definition
Document Summary
Understand the behaviour and be able to predict it. (early environment lead to violent future behaviour?) Nature of experiment is that you have control. (experiment is one research method) Example of theory: if violent tv is related to aggression (hypotheses), then behaviourism would be the theory (we learned from our environment). Naturalistic observation ex: observing someone in their day to day life. Lab observations ex: bring a child into a lab and have the mother leave and examine the child"s behaviour. Danger of it is that the generalization might be wrong. Make sure sample is representative of population. (class, ethnicity, race, social status, gender and age) Incentives towards participants is not recommended, sometimes it is seen as unethical. What happens to the independent while influence the dependant. Extraneous variables can influence results and the dependant variable but have nothing to do with the independent one.
