This disease has a gradual onset, so it is difficult to point out when it began. They know their fears are irrational but they cannot control it. Panic attacks are caused by a specific environment, object, situation, animal etc Re-experiencing the traumatic event over and over again. The disease sometimes does not surface until months or years after the traumatic event. Combination of obsessive thoughts (germs are all over my hands) combined with compulsive behaviour (constantly washing hands).
