Ego: demands of reality, partially conscious (reality principle) Anxiety-collateral damage from id, ego, super-ego conflicts over sexual impulses. How do insight therapies work: therapeutic relationship with helper, emotional support & understanding, hope and positive expectations, rationale for the problem, opportunity to explore feelings, find alternate behaviours. No search for unconscious conflicts/developing accurate perception of one"s feelings. Aversive conditioning: pair undesirable behavior (e. g smoking) with aversive stimuli (nausea) Ellis"s rational-emotive behavior therapy (rebt); we demand: i must do well, others have to treat me fairly, my life should be enjoyable. That was the worst thing in my life. Cognitive therapy (reducing self-defeating thoughts ) + behavior therapy (changing behavior)= cognitive-behaviour therapy. Effective for panic disorder, ptsd, generalized anxiety, certain phobias. May use psychoanalytic, client-centred, behavior or cognitive therapy. Problems often occur in context of a group.
