Researchers argue: 2 types of love- passionate & companionate love. Passionate love (romantic love): strong feelings toward special person, physical intimacy, desire to spend as much time w/ them as possible, biochemical response, high levels of phenylethylamine (pea) those tingling sensations, motivation to start relationships, temporary. Compassionate love (affectionate love): not as intense as passionate love (calmer, serene, mutual understanding, commitment & care for your partner, companionship ( my partner is my best friend , motivation to continue relationships, longer lasting. Moving from passionate love to companionate love & successful relationships. Sternberg proposed there are 3 main ingredients to love: passion (infatuation) emotional state w/ high arousal, intimacy (liking) closeness, mutual care & concern, commitment (empty love) conscious decision to stay together. Combination: passion + intimacy = romantic love, passion + commitment = fatuous love, intimacy + commitment = companionate love, passion + intimacy + commitment = consummate love. Propose types of close relationships: exchange, attachment, loving the self.
