PSYC 2307 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Eyelid, Mitosis, Mendelian Inheritance
Document Summary
The x chromosome comes from your mother and the y chromosome comes from your father. Since the x chromosome is much larger than the y, if there is a gene transmitted by the x chromosome, there is nothing that the y chromosome could offer to counteract it. X chromosomes are called carriers of sex-linked recessive alleles. The term plastic describes something that never fully hardens or become permanent. Neuroplasticity: the ability of nervous tissue to change the mapping of neural function to neural structure. Examples include the ability to learn a new piece of knowledge or skill. However, failure to acquire a skill does not mean that the brain is not neuroplastic. Neuroplasticity is necessary because the brain has to calibrate its interaction with the body because sexual reproduction prevents accurate prediction of phenotypic variation. The brain has to recalibrate its interaction with the body during development and reorganize after an experience for learning and memory.
