Physiological measures have long been used in an attempt to detect deception. Anxiety causes a person"s mouth to be dry used in an old chinese technique. 1917 william manston developed a systolic blood pressure test & attempted to use this physiological response as evidence for a person"s innocence testimony was rejected by the courts in frye v. united. Polygraph: a device for recording an individual"s autonomic nervous system responses. Measures subtle changes in heart rate, respiration, and/or perspiration. Measurement devices attached to upper chest & abdomen to measure breathing. Amount of sweat is measured by attaching electrodes to the fingertips. Heart rate is measured by a partially inflated blood pressure cuff attached to the arm. Canada polygraph training is provided by the canadian police college; restricted to police officers; 12- week intensive course that covers the various techniques, interviewing practices, & scoring. Does not measure deception measures physiological arousal often associated w/ deception.
