Why should we care: cheaper to prevent people from committing crime than keeping them in jail. Sentencing (especially d. o. hearings), classification (classifying prisoners going into maximum or minimum prison), treatment needs, treatment intensity, parole decisions, level of supervision, notification decisions (notify the public depends on the risk such as sex offenders), release conditions . Assessing someone risk determines all those listed up. Assess the risk that people will commit violence in the future (back in time this was the focus) They believed risk is static and it cannot really change but risk is actually dynamic and can change. Develop effective intervention strategies to manage that risk (this is the focus now) Divorced parents; does not have contact with any of them or with siblings. First arrested at age 18 for assault with a deadly weapon and incarcerated for 2 years. Repeated arrests in following 10 years for assault, robbery, drug possession.
