PSYC 2400 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Recognition Memory, Brown Hair, Dependent And Independent Variables
Document Summary
Role of memory (or encoding, storage, retrieval: perception/attention- noticing something about an object/person, encoding- when you perceive and pay attention to details in your environment. Divided attention: short-term memory, long-term memory, retrieval, recall memory: reporting details of previously witnessed event or person, recognition memory: determining whether a previously seen item or person is the same as what is currently being viewed, eyewitness testimony. Estimator variables: factors that are present at the time of the crime that can"t be changed, out of control of the legal system. System variables: factors that can be manipulated to increase/decrease witness accuracy, legal system has control. Recall of the event/crime: open-ended, direct question. Recall of the perpetrator: open-ended, direct question. Primary goal: extract a complete and accurate report from a witness. The phenomenon by which a witness is presented with inaccurate information and he or she is more likely to incorporate that into a recall task.
