Document Summary

Chapter 1 the science of child development. Child development: refers to age changes within a child"s characteristics. These changes are systematic rather then haphazard. They are successive, meaning they build upon one another: ex: crawling to walking. Why do certain children behave they way they behave: child rearing differences: spanking vs. no spanking. Research shows that spanking is not very effective in discipline of children. Child development is multi-faceted: there are many different components to consider as responsible for a child"s development. Example: obese children - obesity can be looked at using all 4 facets and how they affect child development. Nature vs. nurture: plato (nature): children are born with innate knowledge of many concrete objects as well as the emotions (love, courage and goodness). Characteristics are set at birth; the environment has no effect on their development. Rousseau: new borns are endowed with an innate sense of justice and morality that unfolds naturally as the child grows.
