1900 - the average adolescent had a vocab of approximately 25,000 words. 2016 the average adolescent now has a vocabulary of 10,000 words. Reading = less popular, dependencies on technology is more widespread (autocorrect). Death of formal language - people are less comfortable having face to face confrontations. Not much emphasis or importance is placed on vocabulary. Speech: a verbal form of communication. (mode talking, singing) Language: a conventional system of symbols representing concepts and rules of governing the symbols. (code with rules, german, french, asl) Communication: the process of exchanging information between organisms (hand gestures, emotions, body language). Humans are capable of speech, language and communication. But what about other non-human creatures: research examples: Gua: raised alongside a couples son within their home. Made no special effort to teach either the child or gua to speak. Their son spontaneously began to speak at 9 months. Humans will naturally form language where animals will not naturally acquire language.
