No single definition of intelligence because different theorists have very different assumptions about. Some researchers view intelligence as a single trait that influences all aspects of cognitive functioning. Hypothesis that each of us possess a certain amount of g (general intelligence) and that it influences our ability to think and learn on all intellectual tasks. Intelligence: trait or series of traits, characterizing some people to a greater extent than others. Goal is to identify these traits and how to measure them so that we can understand differences in terms of the level of intelligence. To identify those traits, to measure them, to assess individual differences. Lumpers individuals who believe we have one general capacity and one overall intelligence score (iq), general capacity, one overall score (ex; binet) Splitters idea that there are separate abilities that function independently (wexler scales, Gardener 7), better to talk about peoples abilities in various areas (ex; wechsler, gardner)
