Chapter 3: prenatal development, birth, and the newborn. Note: focus on research sections will not be included on exam unless they"re lectured on. Fertilization to implantation: begins when egg fertilized in fallopian tube, period of rapid cell division as it travels down fallopian tube, ends 2 weeks later when zygote implanted in wall of uterus. Rely on presence of hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hcg: glycoprotein secreted by placenta shortly after fertilization. Placenta begins developing after fertilized egg implants in woman"s uterus, which happens about 6 days after conception: earliest these tests can be used to detect pregnancy is about 6 days post- conception. Blastocyst: fertilized egg 4 days after conception, which consists of about 100 cells & resembles hollow ball. Germ disc: small cluster of cells near centre of zygote that develops into baby. Placenta: structure through which nutrients & wastes exchanged b/w mother & developing child.
