Innate tendencies, personality is pretty stable, stands test of time. Traits and mechanisms that are organized in a physical, social environment. Traits describe ourselves and others, explain behaviours and predict future behaviours. The individual: part of you, inner world not accessible to others. Not always verbal, lack of demeaner to tell personality. Organized coherently, 20-50 there are some differences . Deal with situations differently, have different hobbies. Personality serves adaptive function to help complete goals. Even behaviours that don"t seem functional, are! Worrying a lot (neurotic) serves a purpose had more solutions to problems for survival. Organizes findings to tell coherent story, make predictions, testable hypothesis. Beliefs not based on facts, doesn"t mean its untrue but cannot assume its truth. A good theory is comprehensive, can explain most known facts. Can help with future research, not closed ended. Needs to be testable, freud"s theories are not testable. Avoids assumptions: parsimony: predicting something using exactly what you need and nothing less.
