Models of the Personality-Illness Connection
There are 5 models that have been proposed to account for the relationship between
personality and illness
Interactional Model
- Personality is proposed to influence the relationship between stress and illness
- Objective events happen to people, which have the capacity to induce stress, but these
objective events don’t lead to illness
- Personality affects how we cope, and the outcome takes a particular path
- You personality influences your vulnerability to stress and illnesses
Example: you got a bad grade on the exam
- If you are a high-achiever, a perfectionist
- You will perceive the bad grade as either: giving up, thinking you will fail on everything
or the bad grade will motivate you to do better, but you will over-compensate and push
yourself
Transactional Model
- A more complex representation as how people encounter stress in their lives
Personality has three possible effects on how you respond to a stressor:
1. Influences coping, how you cope
2. Can influence if a person appraises a situation in a positive way or negative way
3. Personality will impact which events are more likely to happen to you
People put themselves in stressful situations
Example: an impulsive person is more likely to put themselves in stressful situations
Appraisals:
- You look at the situation as something good or bad
- You decide if you can overcome the situation or not
