PSYC 2600 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Effect Size, Real Sex, Standard Deviation
Document Summary
Sex differences: avg differences in personality or behaviour b/w men & women. Gender: social interpretations of what it means to be a man or a woman. Gender stereotypes: beliefs that we hold about how men & women differ, which aren"t necessarily based on reality. Many ways we believe men & women differ; controversy around notion of actual sex differences. The science and politics of studying sex and gender: Arguments against: findings might be used to support political agendas or status quo, findings merely reflect gender stereotypes, not real differences, findings reflect biases of scientists, not objective reality. Arguments for: scientific psychology & social change will be impossible w/o coming to terms w/ real sex differences that do exist. Before 1973, little attention paid to sex differences. 1974, maccoby and jacklyn published a book that informally summarized current research findings set off avalanche of work on sex differences. Calculation of effect size: how large are the sex differences.
