Psyc 2700 varieties of long-term memory: procedural, semantic, & episodic memory. *all content belongs to jordan richard schoenherr & where cited in lecture slides* Tulving (1983, 2002) was interested in # of distinctions in memory as well as relationship b/w short- & ltm: stm/wm as bridge b/w perception & long-term memory. Encoding specificity: effective retrieval depends on extent to which processing that occurs during retrieval reinstates processing that took place during encoding. E. g. , knowing how to perform 1 operation doesn"t qualify surgeon to perform another. E. g. , having mad basketball skills doesn"t permit 1 to make good slap shot. Episodic memory: storage & retrieval of temporally dated, spatially located, & personally experienced events or episodes, e. g. , i remember where i was when a man landed on the moon . Semantic memory: storage & utilization of knowledge about words & concepts, their properties & interrelations, e. g. , i remember that the first moon land happened july 20, 1969, 20:18)
