Psyc 2700 categorization in context: stereotypes & cultural differences. *all content belongs to jordan richard schoenherr & where cited in lecture slides* Neoteny = retention of juvenile characteristics by adults; central feature of humans: e. g. , glabrous skin, large heads (relative to body size), etc. Make-up, cosmetic surgery, etc. augments this (e. g. , making eyes look larger, skin more youthful, etc. ) Freidman and zebrowitz (1992) examined whether basis of sexist attitudes was gender- related or appearance-related. Stimuli consisted of faces varying in terms of their neoteny (left-right) & gender. Participants rated likelihood that target would be caregiver" or provider" as well as perceived power" & warmth" of target. In terms of personality characteristics, power & warmth were related to neoteny: mature male faces rated as more powerful than immature female faces, mature female faces were regarded as more powerful than immature male faces.
