Code model: derived from information-processing theories, speaker"s thoughts = 1st encoded into words, then translated into acoustic signal that"s picked up by listened, then listener decodes acoustic signal, assumes both speaker & listener share mutual knowledge. Grice (1957/1971, 1975) proposed: implicit contract b/w speaker & listener in terms of 4 maxims: quantity be concise/succinct, quality be truthful, relation be relevant, manner be clear. Given, new contract: speaker agrees to connect new info to what listener already knows (clark & clark, 1977) Both code & inferential modes required to comprehend speech. Evidence provided by chouinard and clark (2003) and huttenlocher et al. (2002) concerning parental reformulation & teacher speech complexity underscore importance of linguistic environment. Consider: individual initially has limited amount of info. They can nevertheless increase their performance w/ instruction.
