Must be able to recognize patterns quickly. Build up templates of things to remember them. Evidence: neisser high speed scanning, scans features and compares. Harder or slower if target shares features with distractors. Evidence: lettvin et al. microelectrodes into cells of frog retina. Edge detectors, moving edge, dimming, convex edge small circular dot. Frog eye tells brain that there is a dot that is moving, it"s a fly. Feature detectors, fly and dot are the same. Hubel and wiesel: simple cells have patterns of light that are location specific, edge, slit, line. Complex are the same as simple but not location specific. Hypercomplex cells deal with moving lines and w, x and y deal with movement speed. Behavioural evidence that: pattern recognition involves processing of features. Bottom up: coming from out there into mind. Gestalt grouping principles, processing whole object at once. Neuroimaging evidence shows specialized brain areas for processing whole visual objects.
