PSYC 2700 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Free Recall
Document Summary
Long term memory: independent cognitive system that has unlimited capacity, permanently stores knowledge and forgets due to interference. Memory systems: theoretical conception of memory that postulates the existence of separate memory systems to account for experimental (and neurological) dissociations. Elaboration: leads to permanent storage of information. Hyde and jenkins: there are two independent variables (depth of processing and intent to learn (whether participants knew they were a part of a free recall experiment). It was concluded that deep processing led to better recall, but the intention to learn did not. The generation effect: theory that when learners generate the items to be memorized, retrieval is superior.
