In this lesson, we will discuss two models of team development, as well as some important aspects involved in team development, namely roles and norms. One team development model is the 5-stages model, where each stage represents an important facet of team development. The first stage, forming, is characterized by uncertainty. This is when the group is first coming together and figuring out how they will work together. The second stage, storming, is characterized by intragroup conflict and involves a lot of brainstorming to make decisions on goals, tasks, and roles. The third stage, norming, is characterized by close relationships and cohesiveness. This stage is when the team has decided on their roles and unspoken norms within the group, and are developing their personal relationships. In the fourth stage, performing, the group is fully functional and are working towards their end goal. In the final stage, adjourning, the group is wrapping up and separating following the completion of their task.
