Info gathering begins as soon as you see the person. What is an addict ? (besides being a pejorative term of reference) Conceptualizing use patterns as falling on continuum from non-use to very problematic use. Use patterns that we have seen with offenders. Much can be determined from clients simply by asking. Severity levels: offenders from slide: 1/3 of use is not problematic, additional 1/3 where substance abuse is problematic but low, 1/3 or 5% where use is problematic and severe. Assessment guidelines: core content areas: severity, problems associated with substance use and misuse, treatment history, client treatment goals, where are they interns of treatment readiness and motivation. Stages of change: pre-contemplation (currently not considering change, contemplation (ambivalent about change, preparation (planning to change, action (practicing new behaviour, maintenance (commitment to maintaining change/new behaviours, relapse (return to old behaviour patterns) Slip, lapse, and relapse are all different.
