Traditional approaches to substance abuse were very moralistic and biological. Conceptualizes abuse as a binary phenomenon (problem/no problem) Subjective impressions and non-theoretical and non-empirical assumptions. Substance abuse is a chronic, progressive disorder. Clients are in a state of denial . Lack of objective assessment techniques, technologies and approaches that have a solid theoretical and empirical foundation. Poor interviewing skills (use of presumption and close-ended questions) Rudimentary and simplistic understanding of client motivation . However, there are many definitional issues that need to be expressed in order to understand the meaning of substance abuse. More recently, substance abuse treatment has taken a different view. For example, more recently, substance abuse patterns have been conceptualized as falling on a continuum from non-use to very problematic use (dsm-v). As well, there is a belief that a lot can be determined from clients just simply by asking.
