PSYC 3505 Lecture 4: Addiction- October 4th
Document Summary
Addiction - alcohol & other drug use by offenders. Traditional perspectives on substance abuse treatment in corrections. Highest substance abuse in any segment of society. Moralistic (very military in the way it runs), judgemental, authoritarian & direction do what i say . Dismissed from treatment for using: need to change behaviour to get into a program that"s meant to change your behaviour . Atheoretical and non-empirical > interventions lack theory. Substance abuse is a chronic, progressive illness. Emphasis on the therapeutic community and 12-step programs > people who have been in the program longer begin to take on supervisor roles. Canadian, uk & us data con rm that between 70-80% of offenders have substance misuse problems (however, not all severe) More than 50% acknowledge that their substance misuse somehow related to their offending. 56% indicate that alcohol and other drugs is rated to at least one crime on their current sentence (alcohol-41%, other drugs 30%)
