Fluxuations in mood are normal part of shared human experience. It becomes a disorder when the highs are to highs, or the lows are too low. Mood disorders include both highs and lows (manias and depressions) Include cognitive, behavioral symptoms not just in mood. The episode is a discrete situation/time period. Can"t be caused by a substance or medical condition. (ex as a side effect by drugs) At least 1 has to be either depressed mood, or loss of interest in pleasurable activities: negative mood most of the day, almost every day. You can have days were things are going ok. Subjective, they say it themselves or other people do because they become non verbal. For kids irritability: anhedonia, things don"t give you pleasure anymore the majority of time, weight loss or gain. Part of it is indecisiveness: suicidal attempt or ideation.
