Document Summary

Focus on change in brain structure, process between communication between brain cells (neuro chemical communication) and genetic heritability. There are no genes that code for behaviours. Genes code for physiology, differences then impact behaviour. Genotype: the person"s unique combination of genes. Phenotype: the physical observable expression of those genes. Caspi et al. (2003) results supoorted their hypothesis. Longitudinal study, started at age 3, followed them all the way up to age 26. At age 26, 17% of participants indicated that they had experienced a major depression episode in the past year. Identified a gene that affects the transmission of serotonin. The gene comes in two alleles (long and short) Proposed a diathesis stress theory for the development of depressive symptoms. Short alleles will not be as good at coping with stressors. People with two long alleles are better able to cope, people with two short alleles are not. = identify which genes are involved in behavioural disorders.
