The psyche separated into different components (memory, personality etc) Seeking medical treatment that has no biological cause. Extreme discomfort with an area of the body which leads to obsession and anxiety. Has increased in recent years due to mass media and plastic surgery. If someone is concerned with symptoms (headache, pain stomach, sexual dysfunction etc) than its ssd. If someone is concerned with having a serious medical disease then its hypochondriasis. Illness has been present in individual history before (may be running in family, or friend had it) Patients explain the pain in emotionally charged words. Everything is fine they are just not aware of it. Ex: vision, paralysis of extremities, seizures, insensitivity to pain, aphonia, anesthesias, anosmia. La belle indifference: anyone suffering from true conversion is serving a purpose. The reason they have a conversion disorder is to prevent them from doing something they unconsciously don"t want to do.
