PSYC 3604 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Twin Study, Meiosis, Pharmacology
Document Summary
Looks at the brain, neurons and chemicals that affect behaviour. Diatheiss stress model: having a genetic predisposition for a disease. Then a stressor in your environment could trigger the onset of the disease. Huntington"s disease is excess of 40 repeats of cag. (going downwards). The higher the number the earlier the onset and more severe the diseases will be. But because of this expansion it becomes unstable. When the genetic code is messed up it is because of a mutation which could happen at any point of meiosis. Down"s syndrome is not hereditary but is genetic. Crossing over: some of the material is exchanged that is random. Family studies: look at a person who has the disorder (index case) and observe the odds of family members of having this disease. Problem with this chart if that if schizophrenia was purely genetic, then if an identical twin had the disease his twin should also have it 100% of the time.
