Buddhism traveled from central asia through east asia, to china and in the 7th century it went to. The form of buddhism that is practiced in tibet is called vajrayana (the diamond way). 400 bce -- 1 ce: development of buddhist scripture. Spread of buddhism to sri lanka: growth of the monastic community, the spiritual ideal is the arhat - one who achieves liberation from the cycle of life and death. The mahayana (great vehicle) movement 1 ce 500 ce: development of new scriptures, mahayana scriptures. Spread of buddhism to central asia and china: development of the spiritual ideal of the bodhisattva - one who vows to return to the cycle of life until all beings are enlightened. The tantric movement 500 ce 1000 ce: development of yet another set of scriptures called tantra. The bardo thodol belongs to a portion of tantra literature: deity means god/goddess. In the tibetan view, death doesn"t mean breath and heart beat.
