SOWK 2001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: School Social Worker, Genogram, Reading School
Document Summary
Lecture 6 - preparation for the first meeting. Praxis ethical (honest), self-aware (aware of own biases), responsive and accountable (can be assessed) action with demonstrates dimensions of knowing, doing and being. It is important to remember that this is a meeting not and interview. Workers need to know: cultural bias, health status, attitude to children and to families, attachment injuries. Self-awareness is achieved through mindfulness and openness and acceptance. The worker is a stranger to the child; this is why the introduction is so important. The child needs honest and appropriate information, and the worker needs to be understanding of the child"s cultural and religious needs. The worker looks carefully at the child"s cultural cues and picks up on them and adapts to relate to the child. Genograms: like a family tree sees patterns of family life emerge on paper. Child carers: this is one in every canadian classroom.
