TSES 3002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Permaculture, Garrett Hardin, Special Period
Document Summary
I = pat where i is environmental impact, p is population, a is affluence, and t is technology. Population, affluence, and technology are all proportional to environmental impact. Population is increasing exponentially and is increasing the environmental impact. Some people think population should decrease and others argue that population should continue to increase in order to produce smarter people to solve the world"s problems. Affluence is the wealth of the government and it is continually increasing. Growth of gdp is the monetary value of all the finished goods and services produced within a country"s borders in a specific time period. The following table is a demonstration of the growth of gdp of developed versus developing countries. What this is implying is that the growth of gdp is constantly increasing. Technology is an expression of the degree to which technology is available to permit development without serious environmental consequences.
