Document Summary
Sociologists see society as stratified (arranged into castes, class and levels) Inequality is strongly tied to gender, race and class. Difficult to move up and down since it is heavily dependent on ascribed factors (race+ gender) Generational: children"s social class reflects their parents class: status at birth affects life chances (ability to fulfill ones potential) Our class position determines our life chances: more wealth more health, less wealth less health, 21 yr life expectancy differences between poorest and richest. People within similar classes are more likely too associate with one another, marry, have similar hobbies, tastes and political views. Variables of social class: power: control or influence over other people, wealth: objects or symbols owned by people, prestige: degree of respect, favorable regard or importance. This is a combination of income, education and occupational prestige. There are 3 categories if resources that shape the positions we occupy and influence our chance for social mobility.
