Education - jan 10 - chapter 16 - lecture 1. Learning via formal education institutional typically state regulated. Learning via informal education-outside of official educational spaces /institutions. 1961: 3% of those over 15 had a postsecondary education qualification. Paradoxical effect- devaluing and increased value of educational qualifications (cid:494)credentialism(cid:495) - it is more important to have higher education now more than ever before. Some occupations have increased credential requirements social work, teaching, Phd now required to teach at most universities not so 40 years ago. Higher levels of education do not automatically reflect a more complex job requiring intensive study/training. As more and more people have higher degrees, what you have is less valuable, you need to go even higher or have something unique. Just because you need higher credentials, it does not mean that the job itself is any harder or different, it is just a way to beat the other competition and get the job.
