Is our desire to buy something simply a thing that we are programmed to do, or are our desires generated for us through being exposed to advertising: there is an increasing prevalence of advertisements. Why is there an ever increasing amount of ads: profit related. A company can receive revenue for putting up an ad: helps people decide what they want, since there are multiple choices for one product, our world is full of things and products more than any other time period. From a social point of view, shopping has very much become a social ritual. If you think about going to the mall, it is a social activity and it is considered a legit activity to do. Consumerism and ideology: herbert marcuse arrived in a country that was just starting to emerge as a mass production society. There was an abundance of products and mass amounts of advertisements.
