Extremely prevalent in contemporary societies: examples: woman"s march, black lives matter, lgbtq. Social movements are collective" phenomena: some refer to social media protests as slack-tavists". Social movements must endure for some period of time in order to be considered a social movement. Movements are important because they are key agents for brining about change with- in societies. Conjures up an image of revolution or major legislative change: not really how it works, relatively rare in terms of what social movements actually do, most are minor legislative changes that go unreported ect. Social movements and processes of change and resistance are important from a so- ciological perspective. Movements can/do problematize the ways in which we live our lives and the societies in which we live: provide critical view of our society in ways we might not have been aware of. Allow sociologists to gauge the workings of the broader political/power structures of our society.
