Document Summary
Deviance is defined as a violation of established contextual, cultural, or social norms, whether folkways, mores, or law. Folkways are a norm based on everyday cultural customs (ie manners and act accordingly in a situation). Mores are more serious moral junctions or taboos such as incest. Laws are norms that are specified in explicit codes enforced by government bodies (a crime is an act of deviance that breaks a law). Social control refers to the regulation and enforcement of norms. This is how members condemn or condone behaviours, beliefs, and bodies. These acts can be enforced through positive and negative sanctions. Positive sanctions reinforce good behaviour (rewards such as good grades). Negative sanctions push you to not do bad and are consequences for deviant behaviour such as tickets or incarceration.
