Way of distinguishing different groups and their collective interests within a society. Different ways to distinguish class: (1) socioeconomic status (2) cultural factors (3) relationship to the means of production. All are important and highlight different things. Despite being one of the wealthiest families in europe, by virtue of being jewish they were considered an "out group" from protestant english aristocrats. Still don"t consider themselves as aristocrats despite the fact that their class the capitalist class is fundamentally more powerful than the english monarchy. Talk about family achievements individually, rather than as a result of their wealth and status. Social class is often related to the construction of ideas and knowledge: or what we call, ideology. Doesn"t refer strictly to propaganda, but rather, the very conceptual framework in which we understand the world.
